Description Phalaenopsis splendid (also known as the “splendid moth orchid”) is a variety of Phalaenopsis orchids, known for its stunning, large flowers. To care for your Phalaenopsis splendid, follow these tips: Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can burn the leaves. If the leaves are turning yellow or red, it could be a sign of too much light. Temperature: Daytime temperature: 75-85°F (24-29°C) Nighttime temperature: 60-65°F (15-18°C) Try to maintain a temperature difference between day and night, as this encourages blooming. Watering: Water the plant once a week or when the top of the soil feels dry to the touch. Make sure the pot has good drainage to avoid waterlogging, which can cause root rot. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water. Humidity: Orchids prefer 50-70% humidity. If your home is dry, place the pot on a tray with pebbles and water, ensuring the pot doesn’t sit directly in the water. You can also use a humidifier or mist the plant occasionally (without over-wetting the flowers or leaves). Fertilizing: Fertilize with a balanced orchid fertilizer (e.g., 30-10-10) diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing. Repotting: Repot the Phalaenopsis splendid every 1-2 years or when the potting medium breaks down. This ensures the roots are not suffocated by compacted medium. Use a well-draining orchid mix, typically bark-based. Blooming: After the bloom has finished, cut the spike just above the node (if the spike is still green) to encourage a new flower spike. If the spike turns brown, you can cut it back to the base.
